SYCO
SYCO

The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) has envisaged setting up a youth Chinese orchestra that is affiliated to SCO years ago. This idea was initiated by SCO Chairman, Mr Chew Keng Juea. To turn idea into application, SCO decides to set up the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO).

SYCO, an established name in the Chinese orchestra genre, is a prolific performing group. For example, it had won numerous prizes in international music competitions in the 1970s. It was also invited to perform in various countries.

The SYCO had produced numerous outstanding musicians and composers in the local and international music scene. Most of the local professional musicians and musicians of the Hong Kong Chinese orchestra were former members of SYCO when they first started out. For an arts group that has made many contributions, SYCO indeed has a rich culture and value.

The SYCO was formerly formed under the auspices of Ministry of Education (MOE) ECAC in 1969. The Orchestra was subsequently under the care of Young Musicians' Society (YMS) in 1980 when YMS became self-supporting. SCO formerly took over the management of SYCO in June 2003.

The SYCO had produced the finest musicians and composers in the local and international music scene. Most of the local professional musicians and musicians of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra were former members of the SYCO. All members of the SYCO, may it be in the past or now, have one thing in common - a passion and commitment to the study and performance of great music.
Looking ahead, programmes have been planned to expose the young talents in SYCO to various forms of training and hence striving towards music excellence.

Objectives
The SYCO gives talented young musicians the chance to work with some of the best music talents in SCO and experience high quality professional music education and training. Through the training, we hope to inspire and nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of SCO.

Music Director is Mr Tsung Yeh.
